I SCRUBBED IN!!!

Yesterday was my last day for GI Surgery and I ended it with a bang!!

Morning, the surgeon tutor didn't ask me a lot of questions. He targeted another local because most of the questions were their history. I know, funny that we are having tutorials on surgical stuff, he went and talked about the British PM. Well, it was related coz it was bout him having a cholecystectomy and the complication he went through. The funny part was when he asked the locals bout this PM, he looked at me and say "ah, you won't know this" LOL!!!!

Then went for ward round and got to know one of the registra is doing a subtotal colectomy (removal of large colon) so I was 'CAN I TAG YOU?!!'. Well I was kinda close to him and he was kinda funny and friendly so I was not having the speak-formally-to-him attitude. LOL

Anyway, went to theater and kinda got lost because he said it was either theater 9 or 12 and I didn't see him in any of the 2! So I was contemplating whether to leave and go back wards or stay then I saw one of the other registra who is from my ward so I quickly asked him and he say he's heading to it now so I followed.

There is this other girl who is in ward 32 but don't know why in MY Ward 31 and there she was in the theater. Stood beside her and then the registra asked "I need a medical student to scrub in" so I just went quickly and just realised I don't know the real procedure to scrub in so I just followed the girl who came in later blindly LOL..

Anyway, the surgeon came in and he was like 'ah, 2 medical student scrubbing in?' OK, You (me) stand here (in between the patient's legs) and you (that girl) beside the registra. 'Jene, Come closer, touch the patient!!' said the surgeon and I was really REALLY close!! So I got to see everything done in front of me!!!!! I saw how the registra cut the layers of skin and fats and finally saw the small intestine peristalsis-ing and then they started searching for the large colon and......

Just to cut the long story short, I got to push the small intestines to one side while they searched for the splenic flexure, then retract the patient's skin while they searched for the rectum and finally hold the resected large colon. It was squishy and filled with feces (can feel like got mass in it and can see it was dark colour through the mucosa of the large colon). It was just the way to end my GI Surgery block!

Went into the theater room dry and clean and after the surgery, wet and red with blood LOL!!!

Next went for tutorials (late for 1 hour LOL) and did my last IV Cannula before I left.
(just found out that I left my notebook (full with notes) and my OHCM at the ward. Hope it won't get lost!!)

Going to move to my new house in another 4 hours and I won't have internet for the next 4-5 weeks =(

So byeeeee.....

Not I perasan!!

Seriously, today was just too obvious.

The surgeon kept asking questions and ALWAYS point at me expecting me to answer. Even though my head was down looking at my paper, busy jotting down notes, he'll make some noise to attract my attention and ask me the question.

Even the girl who was sitting beside me realised too!!

Jeez....

**********************************

It's summer and it's cold, wet and damp. Everyday, it's drizzling or sprinkling. Today's rain was quite heavy and the wind was horrible!! My whole anterior part of my pants were soaked and I was feeling so cold!!

Grrr.....

So far...updates

This is my 2nd week of my 1st block. Last week I was in Nephrology department and this week I'm in GI Surgery ward.

Nephrology ward was great because Dr. Millar was so nice and so eager to teach and he's so funny and I miss him =(

GI Surgery ward is OK thanks to the FY1 (houseman) that are ex-IMUians and whom I know after the senior junior party. Justine (another J senior LOL!) is in my ward and Fabian is in the next ward so he occasionally come over and talk to us.

Anyway, I've been helping Justine with her work aka I was acting like a FY1. Clerk patient, do examination, write report then take blood and do ECG. All on my own mind you!!

So far, yesterday (1st day in this ward) I saw 3 patients and took their blood successfully. ALL 3 TIMES on my FIRST DAY on MY OWN!!! So proud =)

Luckily I read thru my ECG before going to the hospital so when I first arrived at the ward and after putting my bag down, Justine saw me and she went "you wanna do ECG??" I went "of course! But I've never done it though" So she talked me thru at the residents room and I pushed the ECG cart to the patient's bed and started my day =)

***************************************************

Now under stress during tutorials because this surgeon who gives the tutorial likes to ask me question after I kinda managed to answer a question the locals couldn't on our 1st day. After I answered that question, he went ''did you do your basic science in M'sia?'
Later, a senior told me he likes IMU students because we know more and since then, any difficult questions, he'll point to me and ask me!!

This morning, one of his powerpoint slides mentioned cholangiocarcinoma and he pointed to me (again) and ask me what is it. This was not stressful but he added 'IF YOU CAN'T ANSWER, I WILL BE SO DISAPPOINTED!!'
Omg.....I was stunned and err...STRESS!!!!!

But so far, everything is fine =)
Saw 2 surgeries today - fundoplication and hiatus hernia repair & adrenalectomy (both done laparoscopically).

Drunk during initiation

I had my presentation yesterday morning and I did OK I guess. Anyway, my group mates and I went to a pub for a small celebration. Nicos let me try his ginger beer and I thought it was nice so I got one for myself.

It was so sunny (24 degrees!!! Normally it's 6-10 degrees so it really was a nice sunny day) and we sat outside of the pub under the sun. I was not tipsy nor drunk, just red like usual then my friend got me another pint of cider and after that, things just went out of control.

I got so tipsy.
I lost all my balance even when I was still sitting.
I was like floating and I could not walk straight.
Got to rely on things around me to walk.
I WhatsApp my mom telling her 'ma, I'm drunk' =P

My friend who sat beside me keep pushing me asking me to go home but the more she pushed me, the more I felt nauseous so I went to the toilet and puked. Then I came back and drank some water and puked again.

The other locals who are my batch mates too (I think) keep saying 'welcome to Scotland' =P

They were very very nice because they let me taste their liquor and was telling me it's ok to be drunk and Ewen (my another group mate) was reassuring me that as long as I am not dancing and singing on the table, I am alright LOL. More batch mates came and joined us and they met me in my tipsy state, so embarrassing but they keep saying it's alright and keep asking me to have a soft (coke or smth) or water and Nicos eventually got the water for me.

Just a few pictures taken with my new toy =P
My group mate who is from Aberdeen

My SSM group mates =)
Aileen was missing because she went for work.

I managed to walk home with the help of Nicos and the moment I went into my room, I slept for 1 hour. I know my phone was ringing but I was too tired and tipsy to move. Anyway, woke up feeling better but still tipsy and giddy and puked one more time to make myself feel better.

I didn't have anything to eat the whole day hence drank with an empty stomach and got tipsy so easily.

Half an hour after I woke up, I forced myself to join the other malaysians for dinner to celebrate someone's birthday. I bathed and changed and went to Frankie & Benny's with them and had dinner.

My head now is still throbbing and pounding but besides that, I am ok =)

Tomorrow going for party with Aileen and Nicos at night. I think they're bringing me for clubbing whee~~

Got the phone out from the box on 30/5/11

Got it jailbreaked by the senior (young J), got another senior who's also a Dr.J to stick my screen protector and another senior (T) to download a lot of stuff in it =P
Oh ya I got another 2 covers. 1 genuine leather flip cover and one free transparent plastic cover from the older J brother =)

The best part is, my contract is not 24 months but 21 months and instead of paying 159 pounds for the phone, I paid 69 pounds only =)

Thank you so much older J bro aka Dr.J (he seriously don't like me calling him Dr)!! =]

I went and downloaded a lot of games and currently addicted to Jump and Fly.
I got to let the fly jump up as high as he can by jumping on the clouds and board and score points by moving and tilting my phone around LOL...FUN!!!
